This is the most extensive area of malicious speed entrapment that I have found so far. It covers a long stretch of the A1 covered by the three police forces Bedfordshire, Herts and Cambridgeshire constabulary and has a combination of fixed speed cameras & mobile speed camera units. (A resident also has their own fake speed camera casing mounted on their wall outside!? I am guessing the Dustbin wagon does not get flashed by this when it passes... Possibly the resident might try a warning light instead?
Anyway..
Large sections both north and south of this road have been changed to 60mph and when you get closer to the Beeston roundabout it changes to 50mph. Lots of different traffic regulation orders (A huge amount) have been "cycled" on this section of road over the years but not much seems to have been done so I have reason to believe it has been a hoax to give illegitimate reason for the speed limits all these years. I will list the details shortly.
There are some HGV weight limit sign issues tied in with this area also associated with St. Neots & Eaton Socon industrial areas which I cover in the HGV section.
The main road signage issues with these sections is that on the roundabouts for the 50mph sections there are either NO TERMINAL SIGNS or only ONE of a REQUIRED PAIR. & as the road by history & design IS NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT anyone entering the A1 from the roundabouts would innocently assume this road IS NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT, yet there are lovely mobile speed camera units hiding to convince you otherwise! As well as the fixed cameras which govern the 60mph sections also.
Another important thing to note that at the Black cat roundabout there is a LARGE NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT SIGN placed to the side by one of the other exits that is turned towards & really visible at the black cat roundabout so it REALLY gives a nice SUBCONSCIOUS IMPRINT OF "NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT" into your mind just you are navigating the roundabout and re entering the next section of dual carriageway that is 60mph (IN TRUTH IT SHOULD BE NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT) so you can get caught out easily by 10mph by the fixed speed cameras, unmarked patrol cars or mobile speed camera unit!
There is also ANOTHER nice little national speed limit sign on the side road turned to fact the A1 *AT* the 50mph A1 Northbound exit OFF THE BEESTON ROUNDABOUT ITSELF! So this tactic by the council & police + Highways agency is a classic mind trick. There is another one on the A644 at the Corn Mill West Yorkshire and this type of sign trick also on the Ossett bypass which I will go into in a separate topic. (signs that LOOK LIKE other signs on purpose)
So if you bear with me I will add the photos soon. (sorry! Just sorting out all the files still!)
