Crossbenchers bear no following to any particular party. Thus are considered as Independent mostly.
Thus they are in opposition to all, some or none of the other political parties.
Political parties that challenge the current controlling party are called the "opposition". They challenge the making of laws and regulations and how parliament is run by the leading party.
Independent Ministers and Lords might be in opposition to all or none of the other members of either of the Houses of Parliament.
If someone wants to see an evolution of politics, or changes in the ways that politics is done.. In line with the modern day and age then you can put your ideas to and petition parliament. No matter if you are an Mp. Or a subject.
The point of Ministers is supposed to be that they are elected by people from their local areas to represent that area and those people in parliament. Not just to represent themself and their own interests.
The House of Lords is supposed to be more associated with a Lord of a specified area representing his or her own professional interests and opinion in that respective House.
Thus if you are challenging one of the Houses of Parliament through petition - say for example the House of Commons.. Then any independent person has the right to challenge that house through legitimate means.
In this modern day and age communication and travel is a different world to the 1800's when the Labour party was first formed. There was rail travel introduced and there was telegraph and telegram.. But letters and messages and travel have made every persons voice count and be easily heard.
Compared to the days of horses and carriages and days on the road to London.
Or scrolls and wax sealed letters.
Specific times and dates for all manner of courtly proceedings.. And lawyers who only has access and knowledge to overly complicated procedures and rules.
The world has changed. And i do think that it would not be unfair to say that one Mp travelling to London to represent a local constituency may have had its day. When there is real potential now for a form of politics that could fairly include everyone.
If the current technology is not advanced or secure enough to support such a political advancement in politics.. Then how can it be trusted to be secure enough to even conduct and carry any current operations and functioning of politics genuinely and securely??
Thus the current modern politics is either secure or not. Regardless of whom is being fairly involved in any functioning of any current system.

Crossbenchers are members who have no party-political affiliation and participate in parliamentary proceedings independently. They do not adopt collective policy decisions, but rather speak and vote as individuals. For administrative purposes all crossbenchers are part of the crossbench group.
